"By far the strongest poison to the human spirit is the inability to forgive oneself or another person. Forgiveness is no longer an option but a necessity for healing."

‘The holiest of all the spots on earth is where an ancient hatred has become a present love.’

It would be difficult for the author of A Course In Miracles to be any more enthusiastic about forgiveness than he is!
It is the premier lesson, the key idea, the big 'ah-ha' that ties everything together. According to the Course, forgiveness is the transformational lesson that we all need to learn. In fact, it's really the only lesson that we learn.
If we take a look at an extract from one of the key forgiveness lessons in the Course, we'll see just what amazing gifts are apparently on offer when we become really good students of forgiveness.
Workbook Lesson 122 has the title ‘Forgiveness offers everything I want.’ (see link below for full lesson) Hmm, can he really mean ‘everything’? According to this lesson, forgiveness gives us all we really long for, including peace, happiness, a quiet mind, a certainty of purpose, and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world. Additionally, it offers care, safety and sure protection always. (And I don’t think it means the deodorant kind!) We are also assured of ‘a quietness that cannot be disturbed, a gentleness that never can be hurt, a deep, abiding comfort, and a rest so perfect it can never be upset. All this forgiveness offers you, and more.’
Wow, Is he kidding? I would have been happy with just the peace, happiness and the quiet mind! Yet there’s more! Forgiveness also ‘sparkles on your eyes as you awake, and gives you joy with which to meet the day.’
Is that what we experience right now when the alarm clock goes off? I don’t think so – its more a grunt, a sigh and we head for the coffee pot! Forgiveness ‘soothes your forehead while you sleep’, so you carry no cares or worries into your rest. It also ‘rests upon your eyelids so you see no dreams of fear and evil, malice and attack.’ No more bad dreams of any kind. ‘And when you wake again, it offers you another day of happiness and peace. All this forgiveness offers you, and more.’ There’s that word ‘more’ again. Holy heck.
This lesson offers everything we really, really want. These gifts would so transform our day I reckon we’d be walking around like enlightened masters, saints and mystics. We’d experience 'the vast radiation range of our own inner illumination.'
What do you think? Fancy giving it a try?! Today, at regular intervals - as often as possible - remind yourself:
Forgiveness offers everything I want. Today I have accepted this as true. Today I have received the gifts of God.
